On October 9, around noon, a young girl on her way back from school in Pakistan was suddenly shot and injured. The incident, while occurring in Pakistan, led to her treatment being done in the United States. The world’s human rights organizations quickly activated. But why?
Because this happened in an Islamic country, and apparently, the shooters were Muslims (though they were not). The narrative immediately painted Islam and Muslim societies in a negative light, especially focusing on strict rules regarding girls’ education.
This girl was Malala Yousafzai, who today stands as a symbol of girls’ rights worldwide. Her case gained global attention because she was a Muslim girl in a Muslim country.
A Similar Incident in India
A similar incident took place in India, but the response was drastically different. Here, the victim was also a woman — a Muslim doctor receiving her doctorate degree. The ceremony was attended by the Chief Minister of Bihar.
Everything was going well until the doctor, having maintained her niqab through great struggles to earn her doctorate, approached the stage to receive her degree. In a shocking act, the Chief Minister yanked her niqab in public.
This act was far worse than any physical attack. It violated her dignity and disrespected her autonomy. If such animosity exists toward Muslims, there are countless ways to hand over a degree without such humiliation — even via post!
Double Standards in Global Human Rights
Let’s put religion aside for a moment and focus on a simple truth: no one should be touched without consent, especially in public ceremonies. The outrage in this Indian incident was minimal compared to the global uproar over Malala’s shooting.
International media, human rights organizations, and women’s rights activists were silent when a Muslim woman’s personal autonomy was violated in India. Meanwhile, similar violations in Muslim countries provoke instant global response.
This exposes a selective hypocrisy: many organizations that claim to fight for women’s rights actually pick and choose cases based on politics, religion, or geography, rather than principle.
A Courageous Response
The doctor who faced this humiliation showed immense courage. She declined the job offered by the Bihar government, refusing to accept rewards from those who disrespected her. Her decision is a powerful statement of dignity, principle, and bravery.
Conclusion
The global reaction to women’s rights violations is often inconsistent and selective. Genuine feminism should defend women’s autonomy everywhere, not just where convenient. Incidents like these force us to question the motives of organizations and movements that claim to champion human rights.
